Breaking Global Barriers to Medical Education

Every patient deserves access to a well trained doctor – no matter where they live.

The challenge

Medical students & doctors in austere environments do not have consistent access to high quality medical training.

The solution

At OxPal, we have developed a scalable, low-cost model of medical training across borders to meet local medical education needs. OxPal links world-class faculty from Oxford, Harvard and MIT with Palestinian universities—delivering high-impact teaching.

Our focus is Palestine, where faculty shortages, damaged training facilities and movement restrictions, leave thousands of medical students without reliable clinical exposure. By co-designing every course with exceptional local educators, we provide tailored learning that prepares a new generation of doctors to serve their communities.

What we’ve achieved since 2018

48 Palestinian medical students brought to Oxford for two-week summer schools (2023 & 2024)—A bespoke 2 week programme with hands-on simulation, surgical-skills training and ward shadowing that every participant rated as “career-defining”.

World-class virtual simulation unlocked for every medical student in Palestine: The first ever global agreement to provide frontier medical simulation access to all medical students in Palestine (courtesy of OMS). A programme that has been running for 5 years.

Three VR-enhanced lecture series (cardiorespiratory, endocrinology, microbiology) delivered across six universities, with average learner-satisfaction scores above 8 / 10.

Research & mentoring pipeline: a four-week Virtual Research Camp (Jul–Aug 2024) and a structured one-to-one mentorship pilot now connect Palestinian students with Oxford/ Harvard/M.I.T faculty for project design, data analysis and conference preparation.

Rapid-response support in crises: Multilingual COVID-19 crash courses reached frontline teams when they were needed most. Designed and led the first Gaza wide audit to highlight PPE stocks across 40 facilities.

2,000-strong volunteer faculty network of UK clinicians now underpins teaching, research supervision and curriculum development.

Standing with displaced Gazan students: a live database of 200 + students guides clinical-placement matching and remote teaching through the Gaza Educate Medics (GEM) partnership.

And much much more!

We have tried to analyse tractable problems with medical education and healthcare delivery in Palestine and then we have sought low cost solutions. We are willing to try anything that helps bring medical education to Palestine and our models can be deployed in austere environments globally.
